  • Lesson 16 – on sugar hangover days I want green food…

Our last day in Singapore was great, we went to the top of the Marina Bay Sands, the fairly new Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. We then went to a movie and got to the airport in time for a quick bite before our flight at 1:45am. The flight home was terrible! We were already exhausted from walking around all day in Singapore but then we get on the plane, which was Scoot… because we thought it would be fun to try a new airline (to us). The seats were very uncomfortable and the food was not really food so I just didn’t bother with it.

So I’m sitting at my house finally after a really exhausting 24 hours and I think I’m just really tired. Though this has totally affected my whole body, I’m achy, I can’t think and all I want is sugar! I think when I had other days like this I would just go with it and eat whatever I had to, to get through the day. Today we had a good lunch waiting for us when we got home because my friend is awesome. THEN! For some reason I started mindlessly nibbling on random bits of confectionary everyone was eating till my friends said “what are you doing?!?” So I have snapped out of it and I am drinking herbal tea.

Ahhhhh! Back to normal life… I just need a couple of nights of really good sleep.

Travelling done! Back to my routine even if it is just for a little while… in February we are going to Hawaii, Japan & South Korea. I need to sort out a killer hotel room workout and I NEED to figure out how to do intermittent fasting so I never have to eat plane food ever again!

2014-12-22 00.58.57

  • Lesson 17 – no sleep, exhaustion and crappy non-food = body seeking energy/sugar
  • Lesson 18 – I need to learn how to do intermittent fasting so that I can avoid eating for an 8 hour flight. At the moment I get hungry then I feel sick.
  • Lesson 19 – when mindlessly eating sugar… STOP and drink iced tea!
  • Lesson 20 – sometimes you just need a good nights sleep

Travelling and Fatloss Day 14

Sunday 21st Dec Day 14:

Hello from Singapore!

Today is the last day we check out of a hotel. We fly out tomorrow at 2am… so we have all day to wander around Singapore city. Should be a fun day.

  • Lesson 13 – the obstacle is the way… my reasoning was I’m terrified of spiders so I ate one

On Friday we travelled to Singapore from Cambodia… For our dinner in Singapore we went to Clarke Quay, which is a lot more built up than the last time I saw it. Just WOW! The nightlife in Singapore really goes off!

Yesterday I felt like I’d been hit by a train, travel and that time of the month had caught up with me. What better way to deal with this than walk around all day at Universal Studios Singapore then walk around a shopping centre then go to a movie! Universal Studios was great fun, it was a good day for my inner child. The Shanti that goes to theme parks is a totally different Shanti… or so I thought. It is the only time I really get excited over sugar! I seek it out and go crazy just for that one day. My problem now is that I’m not as excited about it now. I think somewhere in the last year my tastebuds have just had enough.

Yesterday I actually enjoyed two of the indulgences of all that I tried… I tried caramel popped corn (yuk), lolly pop (I got sick of that really quick), Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (big let down), burger and fries at the diner (not actual food… blurg), the fairy floss was fresh and magical and I enjoyed all of it. Toward the end of the trip at Universal Studios we found a gelato place with freshly made ice cream and I had one scoop of heaven which was awesome until I got bored of it half way through.

Yes this was a lot of sugar… though I did about 17,000 steps yesterday would not have been a good day for my stomach. That is why I only have a day like that about once a year. Last night most of my dinner was green and today I’m easing off the sugar making sure I don’t keep the sugar high roller-coaster going. Do I feel bad about yesterday not at all I had a ball… do I have a sugar hang over? Yep! Do I want more sugar today? Nope… I just want some green, protein and more walking around.

I have a switch in my brain that gets sick of the same flavours. Like I can’t eat a whole massive steak without mixing in mouthfuls of greens etc. With a lollypop or ice cream I get sick of it half way through it and want to throw the rest away. I used to think I was just a weirdo but I have heard other people feel the same way so I don’t think I am alone in this!

So yesterday was not a good example of fatloss while traveling but the difference now is that sort of day is totally out of character for me… and I also went a little crazy/loopy. I am also not punishing myself for letting go I am just remembering yesterday with happiness for my inner child, which doesn’t come out much. Today I just want green food… FEED ME GREEN!!!

  • Lesson 14 – when I have a planned crazy day I really do go crazy… I’m just glad that sort of thing only happens once a year.
  • Lesson 15 – walking around for 3 hours in a shopping centre in heals no matter how small they are will give you sore feet!
  • Lesson 16 – on sugar hangover days I want green food…

Today we are wandering around Singapore and it should be lots of fun!

Travelling and Fatloss Day 12

Friday 19th Dec

Hi… today I am a new woman – I have eaten a spider!

Just to recap:

  • Lesson 1 – be mindful about what you are eating even on a plane
  • Lesson 2 – travelling can effect how ready your body is for training
  • Lesson 3 – be careful of sneaky sugar is sauces and drinks
  • Lesson 4 – take snacks with you when you go out
  • Lesson 5 – if you are offered local (weird) food… try it… just because
  • Lesson 6 – just say yes… you never know what might happen!
  • Lesson 7 – I’m not trying to be perfect and that is just fine for me…
  • Lesson 8 – to pizza hut pizza just say no… just no!
  • Lesson 9 – sometimes days just don’t go your way but it’s ok, roll with it
  • Lesson 10 – I need to just say no to dairy when my body is already under other stressors
  • Lesson 11 – when you have a massive breakfast you may not feel like eating much for the rest of the day. That’s totally fine just go with the flow!

Yesterday was a weird day… it was my rest day so I had a nice and much needed sleep in. We walked to our new normal breakfast place and I had a fairly normal “eggs with a little bit of bacon” breakfast. We went to the office and did some work. Then we went on an exploration in the afternoon. We went to St.240, which is more of an Expat type area. They have a place called “The Shop” which has more healthy options and it’s set up for Westerners to have a taste of home. I had a fresh salad and a beautiful home made chicken liver pate. Then we had a walk around the shops in that area.

And then… we had a 30min TukTuk ride to the shooting range where we shot some machine guns and a handgun. Going to a shooting range in Phnom Penh is a really easy way for an Aussie to experience guns and throw away money. We had done it before but Barbara hadn’t so off we went. I hadn’t shot a machine gun for and it would definitely take me a long time to get good at it… definitely not as easy a Hollywood makes it look!

The shooting range was followed by a trip to the Russian markets, however I sat that one out because I was feeling really unwell. My stomach had been doing back flips most of the day so I was better off being a bag minder at a cafe near by.

Now for the really interesting part of the day! I ate a tarantula! Yep a big hairy spider… yes you had feel the hairs when you eat it. We all went for a big BBQ in the evening and in the middle of dinner it was time. I had made a bet with my friend Samol that I would eat one with him for the first time on this trip. And I did.

Even though they were dead and fried up I couldn’t even touch them at first. It took me about 5 mins to actually eat it. My heart was racing I’m pretty sure I was getting the sweats but I did it anyway. I always felt like there was something missing from my Cambodia experience and now I feel like I have completed it.

Spiders3 Spiders2 Spiders

The funniest thing was, our friend’s daughter Mana (super cutie 2 yo) she was just curious so she ate one… then she basically begged for the second one… then she was mad at her dad for not giving her his one! I mean WHAT! This super cute adorable little girl, no fear at all ate two spiders in less time than it took me to eat one! I love kids… maybe it’s not realising spiders are dangerous, like in Australia spiders can really hurt people. I think I just really admire her for having no fear.

She is my new hero! Go Mana!

  • Lesson 12 – when your stomach is really unsettled, the smell of gunpowder will make it worse!
  • Lesson 13 – the obstacle is the way… my reasoning was I’m terrified of spiders so I ate one

Well… yesterday changed my life just a little bit. I have now eaten a spider! That is all!

Traveling and Fatloss Day 11

Thursday 18th Dec

  • Lesson 1 – be mindful about what you are eating even on a plane
  • Lesson 2 – travelling can effect how ready your body is for training
  • Lesson 3 – be careful of sneaky sugar is sauces and drinks
  • Lesson 4 – take snacks with you when you go out

  • Lesson 10 – I need to just say no to dairy when my body is already under other stressors

Yesterday we went for a massive buffet breakfast at the Sofitel hotel in Phnom Penh. This is a treat we do usually once a trip. It has everything you could possibly want for breakfast including a chocolate fountain! I had some poached eggs and bacon, followed by two small broth soups with veg… loads of fresh green vegetables! I also had a bit of paw paw and pineapple and a fried banana. It was massive and I LOVED it! I didn’t want to have a sugar rush so I wasn’t up for the chocolate fountain but it looked great!

My morning workout was a short sharp one because I was exhausted and possibly should have just stayed in bed. However, I still got my blood pumping and I walked to and from the gym. It was a scheduled HIIT day but I just did some simple burst training instead of my normal HIIT workouts because my body just did not feel up to a gruelling session.

2014-12-17 07.05.13

This is the look of a person that probably should have stayed in bed! Oh well 🙂

Apart from the massive gourmet breakfast yesterday was a pretty normal workday here. Lunch and dinner where fairly standard being some sort of meat with a bit of veg and rice which I don’t really touch. We went for a walk around the riverside before dinner, which was fun. We walked around the night markets and back streets and past the girly bars. All in all a pretty normal day in another part of the world, followed by a fairly early night – which I really needed!

I think I only have one lesson from yesterday:

  • Lesson 11 – when you have a massive breakfast you may not feel like eating much for the rest of the day. That’s totally fine just go with the flow!

This morning was my rest day so I slept in and let my body relax… my muscles are feeling pretty tired. Weird feeling actually not sore so much as just fatigued. I guess it’s to be expected – I have ramped my training up a bit while I have been here because I have all this extra equipment at my disposal at the fancy Phnom Penh gym.

Today will be fun… we are working a bit in the morning then doing more markets, walking around random parts and will be having a big staff and friends BBQ for dinner so I’m looking forward to that!

Travel and Fatloss Day 10

Wednesday 17th Dec

Hi Hi!!

Recap time:

  • Lesson 1 – be mindful about what you are eating even on a plane
  • Lesson 2 – travelling can effect how ready your body is for training
  • Lesson 3 – be careful of sneaky sugar is sauces and drinks
  • Lesson 4 – take snacks with you when you go out
  • Lesson 5 – if you are offered local (weird) food… try it… just because
  • Lesson 6 – just say yes… you never know what might happen!
  • Lesson 7 – I’m not trying to be perfect and that is just fine for me…

Welcome… to the day of crappy Western food in Phnom Penh!

Yesterday was full of white processed food… Basically, it was not ideal to say the least. My breakfast was fine, some protein, veg a coffee and a coconut. Lunch turned out to be pizza with our staff at the office, I did think about going and getting my own food but I thought a couple of slices wont hurt and I felt a bit weird about getting my own food when all the rest of the staff were keen to eat pizza (which is seen as a treat in this office). It turns out that my body really didn’t appreciate that meal. I felt sick, tired, got the sweats and had a headache (mild) for a couple of hours. To be fair this isn’t just any pizza it was like getting Pizza Hut so it was the really crappy kind. Anyway lesson learned I will ignore what I feel like and I will just get my own food next time.

Then dinner, we had a community launch at Costa Coffee which is kind of like Starbucks so, the only options we had for dinner was white Panini/sandwich and muffins/pastries. Again not ideal but by that time I wasn’t interested in eating much so I just didn’t have many pieces.

2014-12-16 21.00.49 2014-12-16 20.02.29

I am learning also learning that while I am here my body can’t tolerate as much dairy. I think because the air is already more dusty etc that I feel more clogged up than usual. So if I have milk in my coffee or something then it just gets really bad. I notice it most on the treadmill because the running forces me to unclog… Anyway that’s a really gross subject. Point is, when I’m at home I can usually cope with a little bit of dairy, now I can’t even do that! This doesn’t matter really, dairy isn’t part of my everyday life but it’s just interesting to notice what your body is ok with and what it isn’t

Lessons from yesterday:

  • Lesson 8 – to pizza hut pizza just say no… just no!
  • Lesson 9 – sometimes days just don’t go your way but it’s ok, roll with it
  • Lesson 10 – I need to just say no to dairy when my body is already under other stressors

I’m sure there are more lessons on the way for me, overall this trip is going really well. The gym here has been great and I am able to sleep well and have “me time” every morning.

2014-12-15 06.06.23

Sneaky tip… in the mornings I have been walking to the gym it’s only about a 15min walk but I choose to put my phone/headphones away at this time and just walk and enjoy feeling the morning air and quite 6am Phnom Penh streets! I think I had forgotten how awesome mornings walks are!
